To be fair, it's mentioned in the book that Nick's family is very private and he's had it drilled in his head to downplay his wealth. And Elenor is far worse in the book than the movie. Many of her actions involving Nick are for selfish reasons as opposed to genuine love for her only son. For instance, she opposes Nick dating Rachel because she thinks Rachel is a gold digger, simply because she's an American (there might be some projection there, as it's revealed Elenor used gold digger tactics to get Nick's dad to marry her).
As for Michael, it's more than a disparity in wealth. He's rich, but nowhere near Astrid's family wealth. He's self-made and his in-laws…
